A YOUNG sculptor is demanding a compensation of P10 million from five film outfits for the alleged unauthorized use of one of his designs in last year’s Metro Manila Film Festival’s top-grossing film entry “Enteng ng Ina Mo.”
Sculptor Lee Roy New through his legal counsels from the Roque and Butuyan Law Offices sent the demand letter dated Jan. 18, 2012 to the ABS-CBN Film Productions Inc.; M-Zet Productions, APT Entertainment Inc., TAPE Inc., and OctoArts Films, all with offices in Quezon City.
In his three-page letter, New, a University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts graduate, claimed that his “art muscle dress” design was used without his permission as the costume of a fictional evil fairy in said movie, thus violating the Intellectual Property Rights law.
The letter was reportedly received by the representatives of the film companies on Feb. 2.
The young artist is known for his innovative and refreshing takes on sculptures and art shown in exhibits here and abroad.
New’s lawyers said that the young artist won a juried art residency grant at La Trobe Visual Art Center in 2009 right after New won the Ateneo Art Award.
New’s counsels have given the film outfits 10 days to comply with their demands in order to avoid the costlier and longer court litigation should they fail to do so.
Bagares, one of the lawyers, said that they have yet to hear from the film companies after sending the demand letter.
The movie “Enteng ng Ina Mo,” stars Vic Sotto and Ai-Ai delas Alas in a cross-over movie of two popular franchises.
The costume which New claimed was based on his “art muscle dress” design was the one worn by actress Bing Loyzaga, who portrayed Satana, a villainess and evil fairy in the film.
