GONG Shuyang, 25, was handcuffed and sandwiched between two cops at the back of the police car. Documents held by one of the escorts, SP01 Charles John Duran, dropped to the floor, prompting the prober to bend down and get them. As if on devil’s cue, the shackled suspect grabbed the distracted aide’s gun then shattered his own chin with one shot.     Gong was the suspect in the murder of his girlfriend Zhao Chun Lan 4:30 a.m. of January 14 in front of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas building in Malate, Manila. He allegedly took his own life Saturday night.

In his report to Manila Police District (MPD) director Chief Supt. Alex Gutierrez, SPO1 Duran, of the Homicide Section, said  Gong Shuyang, of Room 1119 EGI Taft Tower on Taft Avenue, Manila, shot himself inside the police service vehicle while it was on its way to Manila City Hall for his inquest.

Duran stated in his report that he and PO3 Alonzo Layugan, also a homicide prober, were seated at the back along with the suspect when certain documents fell to the floor. PO2 Jason Ibaco also of homicide was then driving the vehicle with plate number SGK-371.

When Duran bent over to pick up the papers,  Gong  allegedly took his firearm, pointed it to his chin and then pulled the trigger, giving no time for the police to stop him.  The incident occurred  9:10 p.m. on Ayala corner Taft Avenues in Ermita.

Homicide chief Senior Inspector Joey de Ocampo said Gong was rushed to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) but died about 30 minutes later.  De Ocampo said the Chinese Embassy has been informed of the incident. Duran, Layugan and Ibasco will be subjected to paraffin tests to determine if there was foul play.

Gong was arrested after being identified in a CCTV footage as the one who killed Zhao.

The two were arguing when Gong boarded his vehicle then hit Zhao.  He got out of his vehicle and stabbed the woman repeatedly. He returned to his car and ran over her again.

Gong was arrested in his rented unit last February 2 and admitted to the crime.
