AN early collision of title favorites take centerstage as back-to-back seeking College of Saint Benilde takes on a dangerous University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, while Gretchel Soltones seeks to help San Sebastian win a championship on her final season as it clashes with Arellano University as the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament opens today at Filoil Flying V Centre.
Last year’s Finals MVP Jeanette Panaga and seasoned middle blocker Ranya Musa will be back to help the Lady Blazers win another championship after coming out of nowhere to pull the rug from under Soltones, the league’s reigning back-to-back MVP, and the Lady Stags and claim last season’s crown.
But don’t count out the Lady Altas, who have been busy by joining the off-season leagues in their quest to regain the title they last won in 2013.
The St. Benilde-Perpetual Help match is scheduled at 2 p.m. right after the opening ceremony.
The Lady Altas will be bannered by veterans Cindy Imbo and Coleen Bravo.
Soltones and the Lady Stags, for their part, will be tackling the Lady Chiefs at 3:30 p.m. with an eye of jumpstarting their campaign of ending a five-year title drought, the longest since coach Roger Gorayeb started coaching the multi-titled squad from Recto in the 1980s.
“This is my last season and I will give it my best to help us win a championship,” said Soltones.
Other pairings pit Lyceum of the Philippines University against Letran at 9 a.m., Jose Rizal University versus Mapua at 10:30 a.m. and San Beda College against Emilio Aguinaldo Collehe at 5 p.m.
All eyes will be also on the Lady Red Spikers, who impressed everyone by beating the Lady Blazers in a Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference two months ago with rookie Cesca Raqracquin leading the charge.
Meanwhile, the men’s division will unfurl on Wednesday at the same San Juan venue with back-to-back-seeking Perpetual Help tackling St. Benilde at 11:30 a.m.
Other men’s schedule will pair LPU with Letran at 8:30 a.m., Jose Rizal with Mapua at 10 a.m., San Sebastian with Arellano at 1 p.m. and San Beda with EAC at 2:30 p.m.
Perpetual Help will defend its juniors crown starting on Friday against CSB-La Salle Greenhills at 10:30 a.m. with LPU clashing with Letran at 9 a.m., San Sebastian battling Arellano at 12 noon and San Beda tangling with EAC at 1:30 p.m.
The semifinals and championship games in the women’s and men’s division will be aired live on S+A Channel 23 and S+A HD Channel 166.
