A drug personality in Tayum, Abra, was killed in a gunbattle with local policemen yesterday morning, Cordillera police director Chief Supt. Elmo Francis Sarona said.

Sarona said Darwin Balmaceda, a known drug personality in Dolores municipality, fired two shots at policemen out to raid his house in Sitio San Vicente, Bgy. Bagalay, on the strength of a search warrant for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 issued by a local court.

The official said the raiding team from the Regional Public Safety Battalion and the Dolores and Tayum Municipal Police Stations, led by Senior Insp. Noel Bagtuna, returned fire and hit the suspect, who died while being taken to Abra Provincial Hospital.

A loaded cal. .22 Magnum revolver was recovered from the possession of the suspect. The case is still being investigated as of press time, Sarona said.
