MALACAÑANG is thumbs up on a probe by senators into the alleged leak of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s bank documents.
“We welcome the investigation because it’s an imputation [that there’s] something wrong with the banking system and definitely the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will not agree to that. And that’s the reason they came out with a strong statement, as well as the Anti-Money Laundering Council. They have to clear their names and if an investigation will push through, I believe the BSP would be more than willing to appear before their investigation and explain the process,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.
The prosecution panel earlier attached an allegedly leaked document to their request for subpoena of bank accounts under the name of Corona.
The authenticity of the document has been the focus of the impeachment court in the last few days after House prosecutor Rey Umali said the record came from a “small lady."
Rep. Jorge Banal, a member of the prosecution secretariat, on the other hand, claimed he also received a similar document left at the gate of his house.
Philippine Savings Bank president Pascual Garcia said the supposed document has 42 points of differences from the original.
Sen. Antonio Trillanes said the Senate should conduct a separate investigation into the source of the document, instead of tackling it in Corona's impeachment trial.
He suggested the filing of a Senate resolution calling for an inquiry in aid of legislation to look into the source of the prosecutors' documents, suggesting the inquiry could be conducted by the Senate Committee on Banks, Financial Institutions and Currencies chaired by Sen. Sergio Osmeña III.
"It is very dangerous that we have the BSP and AMLC people who can just scrutinize anybody's bank accounts. I am very much interested but this is not the proper forum. An inquiry will flesh out what's behind this issue," Trillanes said.
