PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III is not looking for a fight with Chief Justice Renato Corona and is open to the Church mediating between him and the Supreme Court head.
Asked about speculations that his Supreme Court attack is laying the ground work for Corona’s impeachment, Aquino said that he is one who won’t telegraph his punches.
The President clarified that he was simply airing his sentiments against what he described as the flip flopping decisions of the High Court.
Aquino said that such decisions impact on his governance and affect local government executives..
The President later said that he is amenable to the Church mediating in his rift with Corona although he said that he does not want that the Executive department should be on the losing end all the time.
Sen. Franklin Drilon on the other hand said there's no need for any mediation between the President and the chief justice.
"This is an issue of the President seeing a Supreme Court which is so biased in favor of the former administration," Sen. Franklin Drilon told reporters on Wednesday. "I cannot see how mediation will work."
Some lawmakers had proposed that Congress mediate between the President and the chief justice, while others suggested that the Church do so, to avoid a constitutional crisis resulting from their rift.
But Drilon dismissed fears of a constitutional crisis, saying the executive's disagreement with the judiciary only proves that the country's democracy is working.
Drilon pointed out that when he criticized Corona during the Criminal Justice Summit on Monday, Aquino was merely expressing his views and frustrations as president whose major policies have been blocked by the Supreme Court.
