AFTER receiving brickbats from fisherfolks for alleged overpricing oil companies yesterday announced a new increase in pump prices.
Pilipinas Shell increased by 35 centavos per liter the price of its unleaded gasoline, 50 centavos for regular gasoline and 35 centavos for kerosene. The new prices took effect at midnight while the price of diesel remained untouched at the moment.
According to Mitch Cruz, Corporate Communications head of Pilipinas Shell, the increase in oil prices was triggered by the price movements on the world market.
While the two other big oil firms — Petron and Chevron — have yet to announce their own increases, many of their gas stations have followed the move of Shell.
The latest price adjustment prompted the militant Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide to set a massive protest action and caravan and again demand the repeal of the Oil Deregulation Law.
PISTON Secretary General George San Mateo said their protest action will be on a nationwide scale to be joined by different transport organizations.
The group will also hold a protest rally today at the headquarters of the giant oil companies as the caravan moves from the Elliptical Circle in Quezon City on to Makati City.
