SISTER-TEAM Ginebra and Petron Blaze (formerly San Miguel Beer) and Rain or Shine will field new imports while Air21 has decided to stick it out with the hard-working Alpha Bangura for the Governors’ Cup that kicks off early next month.
Losing finalists to Talk ‘N Text in the Commissioner’s Cup in six games, the Kings are awaiting a response from Curtis Stinson, a product of Iowa State College recently named Most Valuable Player in the NBA Developmental League.
The Blazers parade Will Conroy, a 28-year-old guard who happens to own the Washington Huskies’ all-time record for most assists in a collegiate career with 515. He also played in the NBA, although briefly, for the Memphis Grizzlies and for the LA Clippers for 10-day contracts.
The Elasto Painters, meantime, settled to hire a new face in Arizona Reid. Reid was the Big South Player of the Conference in the U.S. NCAA for two consecutive seasons from 2006, and a member of the elite club that has produced 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
While the Kings, the Blazers, and the Painters are taking risks of bringing in a new reinforcement wherein chemistry always pops up as a huge problem, the Express have made up their minds to keep Bangura.
Air21 coach Bong Ramos revealed yesterday through a text message that Bangura has already signed a contract with the Express for the next conference, making the franchise very dangerous as far as the early part of the tournament is concerned.
With these developments, only Grand Slam-seeking Talk ‘N Text, Alaska, and Derby Ace are left without imports for the season-ending conference, a tournament wherein a handicapping system will be applied.
Talk ‘N Text, Ginebra, Petron, and Derby Ace will only be allowed to field imports with a height ceiling of 6-foot-2. Rain or Shine, Meralco, Alaska and Air21 will have 6-foot-4 limits while Powerade, last placer the past two tournaments, will be allowed to field an import with a 6-foot-6 height.
Meralco, which missed the playoffs after advancing to the quarter-finals in its maiden tournament in the Philippine Cup, has likewise decided to field back Champ Oguchi while Powerade has tapped the services of Tasmim Mithcell.
A team already heavy with guards, Ginebra will again be parading a ball carrier in Stinson. He played for the Dakota Wizards, Forth Worth Flyers, Austin Toros, Utah Flash and lately for Iowa Energy in the D-League where he was voted by the 16 coaches as MVP after averaging 24.4 points, 8.8 assists and 6.9 rebounds.
Conroy, on the other hand, will be hard-pressed to carry a ball club that had just suffered an embarrassing performance in the Commissioner’s Cup where the Beermen were ousted from the playoff picture.
Reid, on the other hand, recently played in Switzerland and before that in Lebanon. He normed 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds with the team Monthey in the Swiss tournament.
