SUPREME Court Associate Justice Renato Corona, Jr., who is aspiring for the position of Chief Justice, yesterday vehemently denied charges of impropriety hurled by a losing litigant. Businessman and lawyer Fernando Campos, a litigant in an online cockfighting dispute, accused Corona of accepting a bribe in the form of free airline tickets for three to Las Vegas, Nevada for a Manny Pacquiao fight last year. But in a 21-page comment filed before the Judicial and Bar Council, Corona described the allegation as normal “occupational hazard in the life of a member of the judiciary.” “....In those instances a judge or justice can only console himself with the balm of a good conscience. It is with this thought, as well as the desire to keep my name clean, that I write and submit this comment. It is unfortunate that, in their quest to control the judiciary, some people have no qualms about destroying the reputation of those perceived to be stumbling blocks to their ambition,” Corona told the JBC. In a January 31 letter to the JBC, Campos claimed that Corona accepted plane tickets to Las Vegas for the Pacquiao fight against British sensation Ricky Hatton. Campos claimed that Corona penned a ruling dismissing his petition for a record-breaking 20 days. He also accused Corona of meeting with the lawyer of the opposing party in Baguio during the annual retreat of the justices. |
