Eric Camson scored 14 points as Freego Jeans shut down Cebuana Lhuillier in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter for a 71-66 victory yesterday to assume the solo lead in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup at the Jose Rizal University gym.
The Jeans Makers blew a 12 point lead and trailed 64-62 with 2:34 to play but forced the Gems to four successive turnovers to stay unbeaten in four games.
”This is a very tough game but a good test for us,” declared Freego Jeans coach Leo Austria afterwards.
Four straight points by Nigerian Lionel Manyara put Freego Jeans back in front, 66-64. The two teams traded turnovers before Autsria received a pass from Lester Alvarez from the left flack and nailed the killer.
It was a frustrating defeat for the Gems, who wiped out a 48-60 by outscoring the Jeans Makers, 16-2, in a span of four minutes to pull ahead, 64-62.
Vic Manuel led all scorers with 21 points and Terrence Romeo added 13 for Cebuana Lhuillier, which picked up its first loss in four games.
Earlier, Boracay Rum got 16 points from Erwin Cornejo and the Waves defeated Cobra Energy Drink, 70-56.
Cornejo, a 6-2 guard, made seven of 11 attempts while scattering 12 points in the first half as Boracay Rum seized control on the way to its second win in four games.
”Sununod lang naming ang game plan. Saka maganda ikot ng bola,” said Boracay Rum assistant coach Ernesto Ballesteros, who called the shots in the absence of head coach Lawrence Tiongson.
Tiongson is currently abroad on a business trip.
