PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino’s first foreign travel could be to the US to attend the United Nations Millennium Development Goals summit in New York slated from Sept. 20-22.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda however said there is yet no final decision on the US trip although he admitted that several of his Cabinet secretaries, notably Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, have strongly encouraged him to make the trip.

Lacierda noted the imperative presence of the President in the significant MDG summit which President Barack Obama will address.

President Aquino had said he will make fewer travels than his predecessor and leave the foreign conferences to his ambassadors.

But stakeholders insisted that the President needs to travel this year for a proper introduction to the world community, meet foreign leaders and learn the nuances of diplomacy.

After the UN General Assembly session this September, the ASEAN Summit in Hanoi beckons the President apart from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders’ Summit slated this Novemberin Yokohama, Japan.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon earlier called on world leaders to attend the summit in New York with only five more years left until the 2015 deadline to achieve the MDG.

He lamented that “improvements in the lives of the poor have been unacceptably slow, and some hard-won gains are being eroded by the climate, food and economic crises.”
