JUSTICE Secretary Leila de Lima yesterday admitted that the soon-to-be-created Truth Commission, which will investigate irregularities in the last administration, is “toothless” since it is only fact-finding and recommendatory in nature. De Lima however stressed that the commission’s mandate is to look for evidence against government officials implicated in scandalous accusations of graft, and if the evidence is sufficient, recommend either to the Department of Justice or Office of the Ombudsman the filing of charges. Furthermore, she said that the commission at the end of the day will not hand down any “guilty or not guilty” verdict on respondents. “It will not judge a person if he’s guilty or not. All we want is evidence and from there, we will decide what to do,” De Lima stressed. “What is important is that we secure evidence during the hearings.” De Lima however admitted that the executive order creating the commission is not done yet. De Lima stressed that the Justice Department is also waiting for the executive order creating the commission to determine exactly which cases the DoJ will handle. “We are waiting for the EO para malaman natin ang exact role ng DoJ, kung ano ang iimbestigahan nito,” she said. |
