FINANCE Secretary Cesar Purisima yesterday asked National Food Authority Administratoer Lito Banayo to provide the Bureau of Internal Revenue and Department of Finance a complete list of bigtime traders who imported huge volumes of rice.

Purisima made the request during a joint press conference between the DoF and Justice Department, and was in response to Banayo’s recent statement that there was no need to import rice since the country is virtually “swimming in rice” because of the huge surplus left rotting in warehouses.

The purpose of the list, according to Purisima, is to find out if these rice traders are paying the correct tax.

“We all know the importance in paying the correct taxes that’s why we will find out if these people (traders) paid the right taxes when they caused the importation of the rice,” Purisima said.

At the same time, he said that government officials who had a hand in the importations will be also investigated, in fact a lifestyle check is in the offing, to determine if they benefited from the unwarranted importations.

“Those involved in the substantial importation will be investigated,” he vowed.

Purisima added that if in the course of the investigation, enough evidence was established, the government will not hesitate to initiate the filing of proper charges.

On Wednesday,  Banayo said that some P100 million worth of rice was imported before President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo stepped down, even though the country was already flooded with the commodity.

“This is another case of a midnight deal,” he said.
