THE recent State of the Nation Address of President Benigno Aquino must have inspired the Filipino Nation but it left many asking, Is he serious in ridding this country of crooks?

The same question was asked by an NGO tasked to fight graft and corruption. Graftwatch Philippines said that in the halls of Congress where he delivered his SONA, Aquino’s Liberal allies in the House of Representatives had in fact defied his message.

The House leadership designated as chairman of the committee on justice Liberal Rep. Niel C. Tupas, Jr. whose father and namesake, former Iloilo Gov.Niel D. Tupas, Sr., was found guilty of dishonesty, grave misconduct, gross neglect of duty, and conduct prejudicial to the interest of the service by the Ombudsman and was removed from office on April 15.

Ronilo Diaz, a ranking officer of Graftwatch Philippines, commented that the SONA of Aquino where he said: “Pananagutin natin ang mga mamamatay tao, pananagutin din natin ang mga corrupt sa gobyerno” means nothing if he tolerates corruption within his own ranks. “The fight against corruption should not be directed to the political enemies of P-Noy alone but should extend to his allies as well,” Diaz emphasized.

He said Graftwatch Philippines is challenging the wisdom of Speaker  Sonny Belmonte. “ How in the world can Tupas be fair in hearing the impeachment case filed against Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez when one of the grounds cited in the case was the dismissal of his father?” Diaz asked.
