Let President’s allies have it — Enrile PDF Print E-mail

SENATE President Juan Ponce Enrile yesterday said the committees on finance and ways and means should go to the President’s allies as any government will “bog down” if both won’t be chaired by people who enjoy the President’s trust.

“I’ve been in government for a long long time. I know the needs of any administration. Your program of government is the budget. Your support is the ways and means committee. If those two committees are handled by people who are not of the confidence of the President, his administration will bog down,” Enrile said.

He  “promised” to give the chairmanship of the finance panel to Sen. Franklin Drilon while the ways and means to Sen. Ralph Recto. Another LP member, Sen.Francis Pangilinan, will head the powerful Blue Ribbon Committee.

But he maintained that the Senate will keep  its independence from Malacañang.

“There is no question (about that). No one can say we are going to be lackeys of anybody, not even the President, with due respect to him. I can assure you of that,” Enrile said.

“If his administration will bog down, it is not he who will suffer but the nation and the people. That’s why when they selected me as (Senate) president, I took it upon myself to refer that to the administration. That has been the practice since the beginning of time,” he said.
