TWO pupils died while   nine others were wounded when an old school building collapsed due to heavy rains and strong winds in  Lanao del Norte last Wednesday.

The victims were identified as Grade 6 pupil Cherry Mae Rama and Grade 4 pupil Junard Obial Quilalang.

Rama died while undergoing treatment in Kapatagan Provincial Hospital while Quilalang was declared dead on arrival by an attending physician.

Also taken to the same hospital were Allan Magsalay, Mary Jean Lastimosa, Macari Casan and Nasherma Omar. The other victims remained unidentified.

Reports from Maj. Arnold Gasalatan, spokesman of the Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry Division, said  the incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. in Sapad Central School located at Purok 2, Poblacion, Lanao del Norte.

Initial investigation revealed that the victims were resting near the building when the incident happened.

Records showed that the building has been abandoned for so long because of its oldness but pupils were still visiting the area to play there.

In Banaue, Ifugao, a  six-year-old boy died  while three other members of his family were hurt badly in a landslide that buried their house Wednesday morning.

The victim was identified as Jayson Bantayan Ganggangan, a Grade 1 pupil of Patilong Elementary School in Bgy. View Point, Banaue, Ifugao.

Taken to the nearest hospital for treatment were Dadaan Ganggangan, 70, married, farmer,  his wife Isabel Ganggangan, 67; and Jayjay Bantayan.

In a report sent by Supt. Leon P.  Talleo, chief of the Regional Public Information Office (PIO), showed the incident occurred at around 4 p.m. at Sitio Patilong, Bgy. View Point, Banaue.

Initial investigation revealed that the victims were all inside the house when the heavy rains began to fall and the slope of the mountain just above the house collapsed.
