The first month of 2012 was a bad one for the Philippine car industry.
A joint report of the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. and Truck Manufacturers Association showed that vehicle sales in January fell by 24.9 percent to 8,296 units from 11, 466 in the same month last year, something still attributed to the flood crisis in Thailand that affect local supply.
In another sad news, total sales in January was lower by 20 percent than the sales in December 2011 during which 10,374 units were sold.
Despite the slow start in sales, Campi is optimistic that the local automotive industry would recover this year, with a target total sales of 154,000.
Campi president Rommel Gutierrez, also the vice president of Toyota Motor Philippines, said the expected recovery this year would be driven mainly by “stable supply, new models and more aggressive sales efforts” by the industry players.
According to the report, the biggest decline was in the passenger car segment category where sales plunged by 44.6 percent to 2,214 units in January from 3,997 units sold in January 2011.
Sales of commercial cars also suffered a 13.7 percent drop as only 6,082 units were sold, compared to last year’s 7,049 units.
Of the commercial cars, only the Asian Utility Vehicles segment did well, with sales jumping 20.4 percent to 2,566 units in January this year, from 2, 132 units a year ago. This was due to the introduction of the new Avanza model of TMC.
Posting drop in sales, too, is the light commercial vehicles category, which suffered a 27.4 percent decline last month to 3,313 units from 4,566 units in the same month last year.
The decline was attributed to the drop in sales of Toyota Hi-Ace, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max.
Sales of light trucks also posted 17.9 percent decline to 124 units in January this year to 151 in January 2011 and 19.5 percent decline against December 2011 with 154 units sold.
Sales of buses and trucks also suffered a big 60.5 percent drop as January sales reached only 89 units compared to the 200 units sold in January 2011 and 34.7 percent drop versus December 2011’s 121 units sold.
