THE Office of the Ombudsman dismissed the charges of violation of oath of office filed against Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and Vice Mayor Isko Moreno in connection with the approval of an ordinance allowing the continued operation of oil depots and similar industries in Pandacan. The decision penned by graft investigator and prosecution officer II Alteza Anoso and approved by Ombudsman Ma. Merceditas Gutierrez dated Oct. 27, 2009 was received by the mayor’s office only last Monday. The complaint was filed by a group claiming to be advocates of environmental and social justice headed by a candidate for councilor under the ticket of mayoral bet Lito Atienza. Lim welcomed the dismissal of the case, saying the complaint was politically-motivated and baseless. Moreno said the complaint was intended to serve the political interests of their opponents. The principal complainant claimed the oil depots put the lives of Pandacan residents at risk. He added hundreds of thousands of residents would have lost their jobs and the city stands to lose millions of revenues if Ordinance 8187 was junked. Moreno said the ordinance does not only cover the oil depots, but other similar industries that employ thousands of Manilans. |
