POLICE shot dead three suspected car thieves in an encounter in Quezon City shortly after they stole a taxicab at dawn yesterday.

Anti-carnapping unit chief Senior Insp. Rodelio Marcelo said they have yet to identify the slain suspects.

Marcelo said one of the suspects has a “Sigue-Sigue Sputnik” tattoo.

Authorities recovered from the suspects an improvised shotgun, a caliber .357 revolver, a caliber .38 pistol and the wallet containing P1,900 earnings of taxi driver Joel Villona, 40, of NRG Taxi.

Villona said he picked up one of the suspects at the corner of North Ave. and EDSA. The man told the cabbie to take him to Tandang Sora to pick up his wife who was about to give birth.

The taxi passed an alley on Road 1, Project 6 where the two other suspects appeared.

At gunpoint, the suspects took Villona’s wallet and dragged him out of the taxi before driving away.

The taxi driver then reported the incident to the Masambong police station.

Marcelo said two mobile patrol cars spotted and flagged down the stolen taxi in Visayas Avenue. However, the suspects ignored the police and sped off until the car rammed a tree in Congressional Ave., Barangay Bahay Toro.

The suspects stepped out of the car and shot the approaching lawmen who were forced to retaliate, killing them instantly.
