THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority started removing all campaign posters of candidates displayed at EDSA and other areas not designated by the Commission on Elections.

MMDA personnel tore down posters, streamers and tarpaulins on posts, overpasses and footbridges  as the campaign period officially kicked off yesterday.

MMDA Chairman Oscar Inocentes said they will be closely monitoring major roads and prohibiting political supporters from pasting campaign materials of their candidates.

Streamers of both local and national candidates, including one owned by former MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando, were removed.

Inocentes said he has personally informed all candidates, including Fernando, about the ban on campaign posters on EDSA and other roads not designated by the Comelec.

But he said they will not remove the giant “thank you” streamer of President Macapagal-Arroyo in Commonwealth Ave.

MMDA general manager Robert Nacianceno said the “thank you” banner cannot be considered as a political advertisement because the President is not a candidate in QC.
