QUEZON City mayoralty candidate Mike Defensor recently vowed to stand up for the rights and benefits of people with disabilities.

The moment he sits as mayor of the country’s largest city, Defensor said he will attend to the needs of PWDs by coming up with programs centered on their ranks.

“We should not consider PWDs as added burden to our society. Instead, we should strengthen and give them more chance to serve the country because I know they can,” Defensor said.

Defensor said he will form institutions for PWDs that will address their  rehabilitation, education and training including the appropriate modern technology that will enable them to fully recover from physical deficiency.

He also bared plans to improve the implementation and monitoring of law implementation of laws affecting PWDs particularly the Accessibility Law and the National Plan of Action for the New Decade of Persons with Disability.

Further, Defensor also aims to provide PWDs with the needed capital in order for them to start a business.

“PWDs are like normal people with talents who also have dreams for themselves, their families and their country so I would like to help them reach those aspirations,” he added.

Defensor assured PWDs that policies protecting their rights in employment  shall be strictly observed such as the one which states that not less 10% of the workforce of government offices should be represented by PWDs.

“Malawak ang mga proyekto at programang posibleng isakatuparan ng pamahalaang lokal upang ganap na matulungan ang mga PWDs na mapalakas ang kanilang hanay at maging produktibong miyembro ng pamayanan kung mapagtutuunan lamang ito ng pansin,”  Defensor explained.
