METROPOLITAN Manila Development Authority Chairman Francis Tolentino yesterday said that protection money is the root cause of the unabated operation of illegal terminals in various parts of the metropolis.

Tolentino said he will look into reports that some erring agency officials are benefiting from the grease money paid by operators of illegal terminals.

He said “heads will roll” as soon as they wrap up the probe.

Tolentino said some MMDA officials allegedly benefit from the protection money paid by bus and FX taxi operators. He said FX taxis at the Centennial Terminal in Novaliches, Quezon City pay  P5,000 weekly, another P5,000 per week from five groups at SM terminal of FX taxis in Fairview, also in QC,  P20,000 monthly from Baliwag Transit, P30,000 from Five Star Liner and P20,000 from Saint Rose Transit in Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

However, a ranking MMDA official, who requested anonymity, said the new MMDA chairman is being fed wrong information by someone who has an axe to grind.
