SAN SEBASTIAN foiled Letran’s upset bid with a 28-26, 25-14, 24-26, 24-26, 15-7 win to join titleholder College of Saint Benilde on top in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Despite posting their third straight victory, Lady Stags coach Roger Gorayeb was disappointed with his team’s effort, as the Lady Knights stormed back from a 0-2 hole to force a decider.
“Yung attitude sa laro, ang pangit. Baka sumobra ang bilib sa sarili nila,” said Gorayeb. “It’s a simple case of overconfidence that it almost cost us the game.”
Later, Jose Rizal University swept Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-14, 25-16, 26-24, for its second win in three starts.
Reigning MVP Grethcel Soltones, who was replaced in the first set and was benched in the second and third frames, took charge in the decider to help San Sebastian stay perfect.
“All games here are matter. Walang second round dito. Every game is a championship game,” said Gorayeb, who handled the team for the first time after missing the first two contests.
Soltones shared the scoring mantle with Joyce Sta. Rita with 15 hits, Nikka Dalisay and Dangie Encarnacion had 12 points apiece while Katherine Villegas added 11 points for the Lady Stags. Setter Vira Guillema tossed in 69 excellent sets while libero Alyssa Eroa collected 37 digs.
Shola Alvarez had three service aces for a 17-point effort as the Lady Bombers overcame a third set fightback by the Lady Generals to prevail.
The loss was the third straight five-set match that Letran has dropped, as it joined idle Mapua and EAC in last place.
Mikaela Lopez led the way for the Lady Knights with 17 points while Faith Torres tossed in 12 hits.
In the men’s division, Arvy Onque finished with 13 hits, including three service aces as San Sebastian defeated Letran, 16-25, 25-19, 25-17, 16-25, 15-13, for its first win.
