AI AI De Las Alas is overwhelmed with all the positive reviews she’s getting for her performance as an aging prostitute looking for her long lost child in Louie Ignacio’s award-winning movie about the oldest profession, “Area”. “Big blessing talaga sa’kin ang movie kasi it gave me the chance to attend my first international filmfest sa Kazakhstan where we won the Special Jury Prize sa Eurasia Film Festival,” she says. “Ang sarap pala ng feeling na maglakad ka sa red carpet tapos pinapalakpakan ng mga tao ang pelikula ninyo at na-appreciate nila nang husto.”
“Area” is important for her as it’s also the first movie where she gets to act with her first born son, Sancho Vito de las Alas, who plays a pimp in the whore house where Ai Ai works. “Si Mama ang manager at handler ko,” says Sancho. “Talagang concerned siya sa acting ko. Sinasabi niya, anak, bawasan mo, kapag medyo OA ang atake ko.”
Is it true he took more after his dad, the late theatre actor Rey Malte Cruz? “Hindi naman. 50-50 sila, kasi sa mama ko naman ako lumabas, di ba? Mana ako sa kanilang dalawa. But I also want to try theatre acting like my dad, para mahasang mabuti ang craft ko sa an actor.”
“Area” is rated R-18, without cuts, with all the controversial nudity and pumping scenes to be shown intact. It will open in theaters on November 9. Ai Ai left for the airport last Wednesday right after the presscon of “Area”. She will have two shows in Texas, at Dallas on October 29 and at San Antonio (where the Alamo is located) on October 30. Then she’ll go to visit her two other kids in California, Nicolo and Sophia. She’ll be back in Manila before November 9 for the showing of “Area” then, on November 11, her birthday, she’ll be receiving the Papal Award from Bishop Antonio Tobias at the cathedral in Novaliches.
DERRICK CLOSER TO AND STILL FRIENDS WITH BEA
TWO of the most promising young actors at the Kapuso Network are Derrick Monasterio and Kristoffer Martin, both good looking, both can act and sing well. Both of them now also have new shows: “Tsuperhero” for Derrick and “Hahamakin ang Lahat” for Kristoffer.
Derrick is very happy in playing his first superhero role so far. “Mahirap siya kasi mainit ang costume ko but I’m enjoying it kasi I get to do comedy and also action scenes,” he says. “This is based on an original concept of Michael V and I’m so thankful ako ang napiling gumanap nito. I play Nonoy, a jeepney driver so attached to his mom, Alma Moreno, who’s going blind. Isang alien from another planet, si Migz Cuaderno as Bokitox, ang nagbigay sa’kin ng superpowers. Noong una, I don’t like it kasi sagabal lang sa trabaho ko as tsuper ‘yung pagiging superhero and I don’t really like rescuing people. But later on, nagustuhan ko na ang pagiging superhero ko.”
Who’s his favorite superhero as a child? “Si Superman. But for ‘Tsuperhero’, ang peg ko is Ryan Reynolds in ‘Deadpool’ kasi may pagka-comedy rin ‘yun. Mas mahirap mag-comedy kaysa drama kasi you have to have perfect timing at nakakahiya kundi matatawa ang audience.”
Directed by L.A. Madridejos, “Tsuperhero” will start airing in November on Sundays after “24 Oras Weekend”. Also in the show are Bea Binene as Eva, Derrick’s love interest; Gabby Concepcion as Sgt. Cruz, the cop who’s Derrick’s ninong; Betong Sumaya as Julius, a small time crook, Philip Lazaro as Mang Pedi, owner of the carinderia where Derrick hangs out; Valentin as Polding, a cook; Annalyn Barro as Anna, the niece of Philip; Jemwell Ventinilla as Choy, a street kid; and Kuhol as Mong, a cigarette vendor.
So what’s the real score between him and Bea now? “I’m really glad that we’re paired again after ‘Hanggang Makita Kang Muli’ and ‘Vampire ang Daddy Ko’. We’re getting to know each other better everyday and we’re closer now than ever before. But friends pa rin lang kami.”
KRISTOFFER OPEN TO RECONCILIATION WITH JOYCE
KRISTOFFER Martin started as a child actor then became a teen star and won a best supporting actor award for “Oros”. More recently, he won the Star Awards best actor in a single performance for “Magpakailanman”. He now plays his most mature role to date in “Hahamakin ang Lahat” where he shows off his buff physique in several scenes, the result of diligent workouts. He plays Junjun Labsat, a hardworking young man who falls in love with Joyce Ching as Rachel Tan Ke, who comes from a rich Chinese family.
“When Joyce gets pregnant and her boyfriend, played by newcomer Bruno Gabriel, won’t marry her, ako ang umakong maging ama ng isisilang niyang baby,” says Kristoffer. “But the problem is parang Romeo and Juliet ang love story namin kasi magkaaway ang mga magulang namin. My mom is Snooky Serna, who used to work as a maid sa family ng mother ni Joyce, si Eula Valdes. Former best friends sila. Eula falls in love with a Pinoy, Ariel Rivera, and her dad, Chinggoy Alonzo, is against this kasi gusto niya Chinese rin ang mapangasawa ng mga anak niya. When Eula eloped with Ariel, Chinggoy asked Snooky kung nasaan si Eula and she revealed na kasama si Ariel so hinabol sila and Ariel dies in an accident. Galit na galit si Eula kay Snooky at nag-away sila and Eula accidentally poured acid on the face of Snooky so she is disfigured. ‘Yun ang pinag-ugatan ng malaking away nila for life.”
Also in the cast are Marina Benipayo as the sister of Eula who’s married to Jett Pangan with Thea Tolentino as their daughter. Kristoffer’s dad is Mark Abaya and playing his younger sister is Mona Louise Rey, with Renz Valerio as his best friend. “Hahamakin ang Lahat” starts airing on Monday, replacing “Sinungaling Mong Puso” on GMA7’s Afternoon Prime. Kris and Joyce used to be on. Now, they have a number of kissing scenes in the show. Wasn’t their former romantic relationship somehow rekindled by their love scenes?
“To be honest, na-miss ko si Joyce that time na hindi kami nagkikita,” says Kris. “So ngayon na we’re working together again, ang sarap mag-flashback about our past. Kung may mare-rekindle between us, all I can say is that we’re not closing our doors, lalo na ngayong lagi na naman kaming nagkikita, nag-mature na kami and we’ve become so comfortable with each other.”
