YOU exercise hard, standing or sitting for long hours especially women wearing high heels, and lack of body minerals can cause muscle cramps. Dehydration or an electrolyte imbalance can also cause muscles to spasm.
Likewise, low blood calcium, magnesium and potassium can cause muscle cramps because low levels potassium is associated with muscle weakness.
Statins, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, estrogens, and osteoporosis drugs can cause muscle cramps as a side effect. Blocked or narrowed arteries can also decrease blood flow to the legs, causing cramps.
To avoid this pain, drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, and eat foods rich in the electrolytes calcium, potassium, and magnesium, such as leafy greens, bananas, and beans.
Choose low, well-supported shoes to avoid straining the calves. Stretch your legs after walking, exercising, sitting still for a long period, or wearing high heels.
