More uses of salt

SALT usually serves as flavor enhancer to a variety of dishes. However, there are more uses discovered for domestic chores.

* Marble cleaner. Place one part salt with four parts of flour in a container. Add water, and stir the mixture until you have a thick sludge similar in texture to toothpaste. Apply the mixture to marble surfaces using a putty knife, and scrape away once it has dried out.

* Removing food odors. Salt can be an effective means of removing food odors from wooden chopping boards and other wooden utensils. Mix a cupful of salt with the juice of a lemon and rub vigorously on the affected surface to remove odors.

* Restraining weeds. Weeds can often grow in the gaps between paving blocks on garden patios. Applying a mixture of salt and hot water to the affected areas can help inhibit the growth of weeds and prevent them from regrowing.

* Oven spills. Leaving casseroles in the oven can result in the contents bubbling over, leaving a mess on your oven floor. Apply salt to the mess to prevent odors from forming and to inhibit the spread of smoke. Wipe away the spillage once the oven has cooled down.

* Rashes and cuts. Add salt to your bath to help cuts or skin rashes heal. The amount of salt will depend on the severity of the wound, but a cupful should normally be sufficient. According to the Hippy Shopper website, salted bathwater can also help reduce the size of hemorrhoids.

* Food preservation. Prevent foods and vegetables such as apples and potatoes from going rotten once they've been cut open. Add a tablespoon of salt to a saucepan or plastic container full of water. Place the apples or potato slices in the mixture to prolong their freshness.

* Brass cleaning. Salt can be just as effective at cleaning up brass statues and ornaments as chemical polishers. Mix equal measures of flour, vinegar and salt. Mix until a thick paste is formed, and apply in an even layer over the affected brass surfaces. Leave the mixture to work for about an hour and wipe away with a clean, soft cloth.    (eHow.com)
