Scrutinize food tags

EVERYBODY wants good health, thus many watch their diets. However, there is more to avoiding trams fats, since there are tricky items that can still slip your dissecting powers.

Many food nutritionists believe these trans fats are suspiciously hidden by the food manufacturers that consumers are not yet familiar with.

* They say fat free.  Don’t grab it yet. Most manufacturers often add extra sugar or starch to keep products palatable. The fats should be less than 0.5 gram per serving. When it is low fat, it should be three grams or less per serving. And when they say its light, the food should be up to 50 percent less fat than its full-fat counterpart.

Choose the low-fat  food that  are more filling. Or have a smaller amount of the full-fat version.

* They say 0 grams trans fat. It may be true, but there are still fats in it. It contains less than 0.5 gram of trans fats per serving.

Trans fats have a new name - hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated. These terms indicate the presence of trans fats. Trans fats are associated with raising bad LDL cholesterol and lowering good HDL cholesterol, which increases a person’s risk of developing heart disease and having a stroke.

Trans fats are sometimes replaced with unhealthy saturated fats or cooking oil, which also aren’t ideal.Since most processed foods still contain hidden trans fats, limit your saturated fats intake.
