ONCE plaque starts to accumulate in your artery, it is leading to heart problem and high blood pressure.
But according to Dr. Steven Nissen, Chairman of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, plaque buildup can be reversed by bringing down the LDL to a very low level.
He recommends to people diagnosed with heart disease to aim their LDL to 60 mg/dL and below 130 mg/dL to healthy adult with no major risk factors. While many take statin drugs to lower their cholesterol level, Nissen said proper diet and exercise play a major factor.
He said reading the labels of the food products you buy can mean a lot. If you love margarine, be sure it is free of artery-clogging trans fats. Always watch your salt (sodium) intake which should not be more than 1,500 mg per day.
Nissen said not all fad diets are healthy.
