GENERIKA salvaged fifth place in the Philippine SuperLiga All-Filipino Conference, beating Cignal in five sets, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 15-7, in the classification phase yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Shaya Adorador delivered the match-clinching service ace to cap the Life Savers’ spark in the deciding frame and scuttle the sputtering HD Spikers.
Geneveve Casugod led Generika’s balanced attack with 20 points, including three blocks, while University of Santo Tomas standouts Chloe Cortez and Ria Meneses added 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Wensh Tiu and Adorador also shone for the Life Savers with 12 hits apiece.
“We had a slow start. Coach (Francis Vicente) told us to step up. Ginawa lang namin yung sinabi niya,” said Tiu.
Cherry Vivas and Jeanette Panaga combined for 33 hits for Cignal, which wound up in sixth spot.
Earlier, Standard Insurance-Navy shrugged off a third set loss to beat Amy’s, 25-13, 25-17, 19-25, 25-9, to finish in seventh place.
With the classification matches done, everything is all set for the championship round, with F2 Logistics and Foton opening their best-of-three series on Thursday at the San Juan venue.
Pau Soriano finished with 18 points, including two blocks, while Hezzymie Acuña and Clarissa Martinez chipped in 10 hits apiece for the Corvettes, who played a dominating fourth set to prevail.
“Our initial target was to make it to the top 4,” said Standard Insurance-Navy coach Nene Chavez.
“Although we failed to hit our target, I am still happy and proud of my team because we gained maturity and confidence to face the best volleyball players in the country. Who knows, maybe things would be better next conference.”
