A young Russian woman was nabbed at the NAIA Terminal 3 upon arrival for having in her possession an undetermined quantity of suspected cocaine.
The suspect was identified as Anastasia Novopashina, 32, with Russian passport number 753852132. She reportedly arrived at the NAIA 3 at around 4 p.m. the other day aboard Emirates Airlines flight EK 332 from Sao Paolo, Brazil via Dubai.
During processing upon arrival, the immigration personnel made a positive identification of her so that after retrieving her luggage at the carousel, Customs authorities under NAIA District Collector Ed Macabeo invited her to their office where she and her bags were subjected to inspection.
The Russian, who was travelling as tourist, was arrested by elements of the airport drug interdiction task group after cocaine was found in her handcarried jacket, sleeping bag and luggage.
The arrest was the result of a joint effort from the immigration, Customs, PDEA, airport police and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) under General Manager Ed Monreal and in coordination with the US Drug Enforcement Agency which was reportedly monitoring her flight until she reached the Philippines.
Prior to this, several instances of arrests were also made of arriving passengers who all came from Brazil and carrying illegal drugs.
