THE Southern Police District (SPD) busted a Hong Kong-based drug syndicate, headed by a Chinese national, with the arrest of its two alleged members, a 38-year-old woman and her nephew, following a buy-bust operation yesterday in Makati City.
Chief Supt. Tomas Apolinario, SPD director, identified the suspects as Maria Rosario Echaluce and her nephew, Angelo, 19, both of Bilibiran St., Angono, Rizal.
Apolinario said the suspects were arrested by operatives of SPD District Anti-Illegal Drugs in a buy-bust operation after closely monitoring an information about the bulk delivery of shabu to Cebu.
He said the suspects were arrested at 10:30 a.m. at the food court of ABC Building in Guadalupe, Makati City. Seized from the suspects were 22 kilos of shabu.
He added that the suspects were allegedly members of a HK-based drug syndicate headed by a Chinese with an inmate contact at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, identified as Hilario Labanero.
“Ang kanilang mastermind ay wala sa bansa, nasa ibang bansa, and they are operating from outside of our country,” Apolinario said.
Apolinario added that the syndicate is well entrenched with members acting to store the illegal drugs, as well as delivery man and sellers.
He further said that the suspects provided police the names of their cohorts but he declined to identify them so as not to jeopardize follow-up information.
