POCARI Sweat coach Rommel Abella knows that a different University of Santo Tomas team will show up in the Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference semifinals.
The Lady Warriors overcame a third set meltdown with a resounding fourth set romp, scoring a 25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14 victory over the Tigresses Wednesday night to clinch the top seed in the Final Four with a league-best 6-1 record at the Philsports Arena.
UST, with an inferior quotient after dropping in a three-way tie with BaliPure and Bureau of Customs at 5-2, fell in No. 4 and will face Pocari Sweat anew in the best-of-three semifinals on Saturday at the same Pasig venue.
“It will be fun, kasi sila na naman,” said Abella on the Tigresses, the lone collegiate team in the semis.
It was Abella’s first coaching showdown against his close buddy, UST mentor Kungfu Reyes, who were teammates in several UAAP men’s volleyball championships for the España-based spikers in the late 90s, a thing he relishes much.
The familiarity with the Tigresses was somehow the key to the Lady Warriors victory, but Abella cautioned his troops not to rest their laurels when the ball starts to fly in Game 1.
“Kilala ko silang lahat doon and I know babawi sila. We need to focus on our own game and our own plays. Alam nating UST is a well-coached team,” said Abella, who steered Pocari Sweat to the Open Conference championship last June.
Another thing that went for the Lady Warriors was the Tigresses looked spent after winning the Unigames last weekend.
