A TOTAL of 167 policemen and seven non-uniformed personnel of the Philippine National Police have tested positive for substance abuse and face expulsion from the service, the PNP Crime Laboratory Service said yesterday.

The 174 were among the 159,129 uniformed and non-uniformed personnel of the PNP who were subjected to random drug testing since last July 1 on orders of PNP chief Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ M. de la Rosa, said PNP Crime Lab director, Chief Superintendent Aurelio C. Trampe Jr.

The rest of those tested—156,417 in all tested negative for shabu or marijuana, meaning only around 0.1 percent of those subjected to surprise drug tests were found positive for substance abuse.

Trampe said that during the period, they also subjected 47,265 persons to a criminal drug test and examined more than 350 kilograms of confiscated shabu, marijuana, toluene and cocaine seized by the police.
