MERALCO brought down favored Talk in a game rich in lead changes and deadlocks, 119-113, last night to move on the cusp of making the finals of the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Jimmy Alapag banged in a long three-pointer with 46 seconds left to give the Bolts a 115-111 lead from which the Tropang Texters never recovered.
With the win, the Bolts now have to beat the Texters tomorrow to make the finals against either Ginebra or San Miguel Beer.
Durham led the way for the Bolts with 23 points, while Reynel Hugnatan added 21.
Jason Castro carried the fight for the Tropang Texters with 28 points, followed by Larry Finacier with 20 and Ranidel de Ocampo with 15.
Meanwhile, San Miguel Beer coach Leo Austria and his team found themselves on the ropes after taking a sorry loss in Game 3 of their semifinal series with Ginebra the other night.
But for him, there’s no reason to sulk and cry, even reminding everyone the Beermen had been in this similar situation before. Yet climbed out of a hole and went on to succeed.
“We’ve been in worse situation than this,” Austria said after a heartbreaking 97-96 loss to the Kings left SMB 1-2 down in the best-of-five series.
“0-3, we’re able to comeback. This is a best-of-five so we still have to get two wins to get into the finals, so there’s lot of chances.”
The Beermen pulled off the greatest comeback yet in the 41-year history of the pro league just eight months ago when they rallied from a deep 0-3 hole and won the next four games of the all-Filipino finals at the expense of Alaska.
