Citing maritime threats of piracy, terrorism and other maritime transnational crimes, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) convened yesterday the Counter Terrorism Course via its Special Operations Group in a simple ceremony at its headquarters in Manila.
The training included CQB, Small Unit Tactics, Vessel Boarding Search and Seizure (VBSS), Tactical Emergency Responder (TACER), Marksmanship, Explosives Reconnaissance, Beach Defense Perimeter and hand-to-hand Combat.
Forty trainees joined the training.
Coast Guard commandant Admiral Wilfredo D. Tamayo noted that as an aftermath of the Superferry 14 and Sasa Wharf Davao bombing incidents in the past, the Coast Guard Anti-Terrorist Unit (CGATU) was activated in September 20, 2007 wherein members from the Special Operations Group were trained to address hostile situations that may endanger the safety of the riding public, and vital port facilities.
There are presently around 120 SOG members who are qualified as CT personnel.
Equipage such as side arms, assault FA’s, vest and inflatable boats are gradually being enhanced for the unit.
With the public safety and security as its paramount concern, the Coast Guard has always public safety and security as its paramount concern such that the Coast Guard has also intensified its security measures by deploying more Sea Marshals, K9 and SOG personnel.
Likewise, it has activated its Deployable Response Group (DRG) in anticipation of the influx of passengers for the Lenten Season.
Tamayo once again emphasized the need to enhance vigilance, preparedness and round-the-clock visibility required of all Coast Guard units nationwide.
