Mining operation big boost for Davao del Sur town

MAYOR Atty. Marivic Diamante, of Kiblawan, Davao del Sur, told local media men that they are awaiting the operation soon of the  Tampakan copper-gold project which could  become the biggest mining operation in the country.

Although the minerals deposit is in nearby Tampakan, South Cotabato, Diamante explained that Kiblawan will be hosting major facilities for the mine, including a fresh water dam and a tailings storage facility.

The mayor also announced that Kiblawan will conduct a public consultation for the mine project today.

Earlier, Diamante said they are excited since the biggest infrastructure to be constructed in the history of the country will be in their municipality. Mayor Diamante said this will mean employment, livelihood, and even local tourism opportunities for their town.

“Local economy for Kiblawan will be very robust and we are really waiting for that to happen,” Diamante said.

However, Diamante emphasized the importance of the commitment of Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI), government contractor for the Tampakan mine, that they will do this project right and according to their impact mitigation management plans.

“I am calling on all groups, pro or anti mining, to work with us in monitoring this project once it operates to make sure that the proponent delivers their commitment,” Diamante said.

“We are very happy with how the environmental impact assessment for the Tampakan mine was conducted with credible experts taking the lead in the technical studies,” the mayor said.

According to the mayor, things are looking good for the project with the current P-Noy administration expressing support for the mining industry and  with the 1995 Mining Law still in effect.
