Our best kept secret

ENVIRONMENTAL concerns and government regulations have made finding substitutes for the conventional gasoline-powered internal combustion engine a priority for both manufacturers and consumers. Cleanfuel was established in 2007 in order to meet the growing demand of taxi units using Auto LPG as fuel. Back in 2004, the continued spike in the price of gasoline prompted Atty. Bong Suntay, who was the president of the Philippine National Taxi Operators Association (PNTOA) and owner of the Basic Taxi Fleet to look for a cheaper fuel alternative.

In Atty. Suntay’s travels in Japan, Korea, and Australia, he noticed that the taxis in those countries were using Liquefied Petroleum Gas as fuel. Intrigued with the possibilities of using the same type of fuel in the Philippines, he started doing some research and discovered that LPG has long been used as automotive fuel in a lot of advanced countries not only because it was cheaper but also because it was a cleaner fuel alternative. Convinced that it was the correct direction, together with friends Cielo Fregil and Kuki Buencamino, they went in search for the best of Auto LPG conversion kit and brought it to the Philippines.

LPG cars fuelled by Cleanfuel provide a number of environmental benefits -- cleaner air, less CO2 and a reduced amount of particulate emissions. Converting a vehicle to LPG means making a significant contribution to a greener planet. LPG emits less carbon dioxide than petrol, and less nitrogen oxide and fewer particulates than diesel.

The use of Auto LPG as a clean and cheaper alternative to gasoline was well received by both taxi operators and drivers that it became evident there would eventually be a demand for public refilling stations. Together with his friends Marco Atienza, Ralph Atienza, Ben Andaya and Victor Go, Atty. Bong Suntay caused the construction of the first two Cleanfuel stations, one located at E. Rodriguez Avenue and the other at Congressional Avenue, Quezon City.

Having the needs of Public Utility Vehicle drivers in mind, each Cleanfuel station was constructed with amenities such as a driver’s lounge, maintenance bays with mechanics providing free engine tune up, clean toilets and showers and a canteen which made every Cleanfuel station not just a fuel refilling station but also a one stop rest area for public and private drivers alike.
The competent and hands on stewardship of partners, Atty. Bong Suntay, Ralph Atienza and Saymour Go has allowed Cleanfuel to grow at an unprecedented rate. With numerous Cleanfuel stations all over Luzon providing not only Auto LPG, but also high Quality Diesel, Unleaded 91 and Premium 95 octane fuel for less, the care and service provided to PUV drivers which made them into loyal return customers of Cleanfuel are now also being enjoyed by private vehicle owners, corporate vehicle operators, and commercial vehicle drivers, who are now among the fast-growing customer base of Cleanfuel.
As one of the earliest proponents of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Auto LPG) in the country, Cleanfuel recognizes the need to utilize an alternative fuel that produces minimal carbon emission, thus helping to preserve the air we breathe. Today, Cleanfuel continues to grow, bringing clean and inexpensive quality fuel closer to motorists, where more and more car owners are saving on fuel cost. This growth is attributed to Cleanfuel’s loyal PUV customer base making them the current market leader in the sector and steadily gaining strong brand acceptance, expanding their market share by reaching diverse customer demographics.

“The clear and present danger of climate change means we cannot burn our way to prosperity. We already rely too heavily on fossil fuels. We need to find a new, sustainable path to the future we want. We need a clean industrial revolution” (Ban Ki-Moon, Former UN Secretary General).  Similarly, Pope Francis calls for a cooperative (fraternal) relationship with creation by saying; “Fraternal love can only be gratuitous … that is why it is possible to love our enemies. This same gratuitousness inspires us to love and accept the wind, the sun and the clouds, even though we cannot control them.”
